Our Adoption Story

We intially created this website to update family and friends about our journey to adopting a baby from Taiwan. We traveled to Taiwan in December 2005 and brought home our wonderful baby boy, William Ke-Fan. The blog has been such a hit with family and friends that we have decided to continue it.

A Name for Baby

We have finally decided on a name for the baby. We agreed from the beginning that we wanted to give him a new first name and keep his birth name for his middle name. That way, his name will give him ties to his adoptive family and to his birth family. Quite a few adoptive families follow this convention. We deliberated for quite a while and ended up choosing the name that we considered first. The baby's name will be William Ke-Fan.

We chose the name William since this is the name of Allen's dad and of Angela's grandfather. We plan to call him William or Will. However, we'll see if this sticks with everyone else in our life. We've heard lots of interesting stories for how nicknames get started in these parts!

We have learned a lot about the roots of his birth name since the referral. Ke means strong and Fan is the word for the canvas material that is used to make ship sails. Babies from the orphanage born around the same time will share the same first name: Ke. So, this will be a connection for our baby to the others that shared a nursery with him. The second half of the name is usually chosen by the birth mother, with the help of a social worker. A chinese friend pointed out that this is a good name for the baby since he will be traveling overseas to his new home.

Angela and Allen
Love the name Ke Fan and the meaning seems appropriate as well as a tie to his past like you said. We are trying to decide whether to keep our child's given name as a middle name as well. William is adorable...I know how hard the waiting is!!!!!
