Our Adoption Story

We intially created this website to update family and friends about our journey to adopting a baby from Taiwan. We traveled to Taiwan in December 2005 and brought home our wonderful baby boy, William Ke-Fan. The blog has been such a hit with family and friends that we have decided to continue it.

Funny, Funny Boy!

Every once in a while, William will do something that really tickles us. For instance, he figured out early on how to remove the plastic tubs from the shelves holding his toys. He drags these bins all over the living room. It didn't take him long to figure out that he can turn them over and stand on them. The next step was to sit in them. Now, for the bigger bins this is no problem.

The smaller ones, on the other hand, pose a bit of a dilemma. William had a heck of a time trying to get out of this bin a few moments later.

William loves climbing things...He likes climbing on things...He likes climbing in things...He likes climbing up things...William climbed into this basket of books and sat down to take a look.

A few weeks ago, William started walking backwards. He was in the middle of the room and just starting doing it. I don't know why he does this--I guess, just because he can. He only does it every once in a while and only for 30 seconds or so at a time, but it is so funny to watch. It's a nice change in pace from his usual full-out run. He slows down and will glance over his shoulder every little while. The first time I saw him do this, it looked like he was trying to moon walk! I wish I could catch this on camera or video.

William has shown a great interest in music for quite a while. He loves to listen to music and dance and is fascinated by the piano and guitar. Last week, he was listening to some music with his Daddy. William started beating out the rhythm on the coffee table. Allen was really impressed with how well he was able to keep time. He started thinking about what a great musician William would grow up to be. He had grand visions of the contributions that William would make to the music world. Just as Allen thought about the wonderful coordination that it took for his son to pound out the beat, William took two steps forward and fell on his face.

William has entered an imitation stage. He likes to imitate us. He holds his hand, a remote control, or anything handy up to his ear and pretends that he is talking on the phone. He will sit on the floor by himself and pretend to read a book out loud. Long ago, he learned how to scold the cats and dog if they are doing something that he doesn't like. One day, I was changing his diaper and called out for his Daddy. "ALL-LLEN!" I yelled across the house. Not a second later, I heard this high-pitched echo, "A-LEN!" I couldn't believe it. His usually muddled speech rang through the house, clear as a bell!

Tonight, Allen was doing the dishes. He looked down just in time to catch sight of William licking the back side of a frying pan in the dishwasher. William had such a look of concentration on his face. Allen looked up at me and asked why he was doing that. It was then that I realized that he was imitating the dog! A few moments later, the two of them were side by side, licking the pan together. This time, William had a perplexed look on his face as if to say, "Tell me why we're doing this again."
